Summary

Airservices Australia is looking for an experienced Communications Specialist to join our External Communications team.

Reporting to the Head of External Communications, you’ll help deliver our external communications strategy, build strong relationships with media and stakeholders, and identify opportunities to tell the stories that strengthen the Airservices brand and reputation.

The Role & The Team

You’ll work at the heart of a complex, nationally significant organisation, supporting proactive media engagement as well as responding to emerging issues.

From developing media releases and pitching stories through to managing enquiries, supporting issues and crisis communications and creating content across multiple channels, you’ll play an important role in how Airservices communicates with external audiences.

You’ll work closely with senior leaders and teams across the organisation, turning complex and sometimes technical information into communication that is clear, engaging and accessible.

In this role, you will:

- Build and maintain strong relationships with local, national and trade media, proactively identifying and pitching opportunities that enhance the Airservices profile and reputation.

- Develop high-quality media releases, articles, social content, messaging and other communications materials.

- Manage media enquiries with sound judgement, accuracy and responsiveness.

- Develop communications plans and messaging in partnership with internal stakeholders.

- Support communications during emerging issues and crises.

- Translate complex information into clear, concise and compelling stories for external audiences.

- Monitor the media landscape and provide timely analysis on issues relevant to Airservices.

- Collaborate across the organisation to ensure external messaging is coordinated, consistent and aligned with our strategic objectives.

The Person

We’re particularly interested in people who have genuine media experience, whether developed through journalism, a newsroom environment or a media-focused communications role.

You’ll bring:

- At least five years’ experience in media, communications or journalism.

- Strong media relations experience and a well-developed understanding of how contemporary newsrooms and journalists operate.

- Journalism and/or metropolitan print or broadcast media experience will be highly regarded.

- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with outstanding accuracy and attention to detail.

- Strong news judgement and a genuine passion for storytelling.

- Experience developing media strategies, pitching stories and responding to media enquiries.

- The ability to take complex subject matter and communicate it in a way that is clear and engaging.

- Strong stakeholder skills and the confidence to work with senior executives, media and diverse internal teams.

- The ability to remain effective under pressure, balance multiple priorities and respond quickly when issues emerge.

- Flexibility to participate in after-hours and weekend on-call requirements when required.
