The Role & The Team

As a Senior Safety Risk & Assurance Specialist, you will play a key part in enabling leaders and team members across Airservices to effectively manage operational safety risks and meet compliance obligations in a safety-critical environment. You’ll contribute to the Safety Risk & Assurance teams’ program of work by:

  • Leading and conducting internal audit and assurance activities to ensure conformance with internal policies and  Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations.
  • Leading and conducting ATM safety investigations to identify issues and causal factors.
  • Evaluating the performance and effectiveness of key risk controls and, where necessary, advising stakeholders on risk mitigation.
  • Mapping safety occurrences to identify risk consequence and analysing safety data from a variety of sources to identify trends.
  • You will also identify opportunities for improvement and drive initiatives that enhance safety outcomes. Your influence will extend across business functions, helping to coordinate safety initiatives that foster a proactive safety culture.

The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with the ability to guide and influence stakeholders at all levels. You’ll bring strong written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with both internal and external partners, combined with well-developed negotiation and interpersonal skills to deliver meaningful safety improvements across the organisation.

Please note that this role is not a Workplace Health and Safety role, as this function is performed by another dedicated team within the Safety division.

Skills and Experience

The successful applicant will ideally possess:

  • Relevant qualification as a Lead Auditor or Safety Investigator, or equivalent experience.
  • Significant practical experience in leading audits or investigations within Air Traffic Control or another area of the aviation industry; or another safety regulated industry (e.g. Defence, Rail, Oil and Gas).
  • Tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in safety risk management or a related field is desirable.
  • Well-developed knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS) combined with experience in the practical application of an SMS
  • Demonstrated experience planning and coordinating work, monitoring performance against deadlines and milestones.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology to analyse numerical data, verbal data and other sources of information to propose workable solutions to a range of problems.
  • Effective and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous experience in an Air Traffic Control environment or as a pilot would be advantageous.
