Your Impact. Your Career.

Looking for a career with purpose, teamwork and real community impact?

As an Aviation Rescue Fire Fighter (ARFF) with Airservices Australia, you'll be part of a highly trained team helping to keep Western Sydney International Airport safe and ready to respond when people need assistance most.

Working alongside a close-knit crew, you'll play an important role protecting travellers, airport workers and the broader community.

What Does a Day Look Like?

No two days are the same.

A typical shift may include practising drills with your crew, maintaining specialist firefighting vehicles and equipment, physical fitness training, emergency response readiness checks, and supporting airport safety activities.

While major emergencies are rare, ARFF crews are prepared 24/7 to respond quickly and effectively to aircraft incidents, medical emergencies, fires and other airport events when they occur. Teamwork, preparation and continuous learning are at the heart of the role.

What You'll Do

  • Respond to aircraft incidents and airport emergencies
  • Provide first aid and emergency assistance
  • Maintain specialist firefighting vehicles and equipment
  • Participate in ongoing operational and fitness training
  • Support airport safety and emergency preparedness activities
  • Work as part of a close-knit, high-performing team

No Experience Required

You don't need previous firefighting experience.

Airservices provides comprehensive paid training, nationally recognised qualifications and ongoing development to help you build a rewarding long-term career. Successful recruits complete formal training while being paid and have opportunities to continue developing throughout their careers. The initial 15-week recruit course is held at our world-class training facility in Melbourne. You'll receive your salary throughout training, and accommodation will be provided.

To apply, you'll need:

  • The ability to successfully complete a suite of online testing, medical assessments and meet the minimum standards of the Physical Aptitude Test (PAT)
  • Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or Australian permanent residency

  • Hold, or be actively working towards, a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence ready for recruit training in early 2027

  • Strong teamwork, communication and decision-making skills

Physical Aptitude Test (PAT)

Firefighting starts with preparation. Resources are available now to help you understand the assessment and begin training well before testing.

As part of the recruitment process, candidates may be invited to complete a Physical Aptitude Test (PAT), designed to assess physical readiness for the ARFF Recruit Course. The assessment measures the fitness, strength and capability required to perform the role safely and effectively. Resources are available to help you understand the assessment and begin preparing well before testing.
