The Role & Team
We are seeking a Training Ground Operations Manager (ARFFS HFTG Simulator Adviser) to oversee the safe and effective operation of Australia’s leading ARFFS training facility. The role is responsible for end-to-end readiness of the Hot Fire Training Ground, enabling live‑fire training from recruit to officer level.
Based in Melbourne, this world‑class simulator trains around 400 firefighters each year. Reporting to the ARFFS Delivery Lead, you will manage daily on‑site operations, working closely with trainers, firefighters, contractors and stakeholders to ensure training is delivered safely and on schedule.
You will be responsible for:
• Running hot fire training ground operations, including live-fire simulation activities
• Managing contractors, maintenance programs and start-up checks
• Planning daily operations to support up to 50 weeks of training delivery per year
• Managing WHS risks in a high-risk operational environment, ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental and regulatory requirements
• Supporting training delivery for internal cohorts (recruits through to officers) and occasional external users
The role operates Monday to Friday, with typical operating hours of 7:00am – 3:00pm, with some overtime required during peak training or operational periods. All work is on-site to support the operational nature of the facility.

You are a trade professional with a strong background in high‑risk, asset‑intensive environments. Experience from related industries such as plant operations, large‑scale facilities management, or electrical or mechanical trades will translate well to this role, along with the ability to lead people and contractors, and make real‑time operational decisions to ensure training is delivered safely and effectively.
You bring:
• A trade certificate or equivalent experience in an associated industry
• Demonstrated ability to manage work plans and schedules
• Strong communications and stakeholder engagement skills
• Strong experience in operating equipment and facilities management
• A Senior First Aid Certificate or the ability to achieve one
• Heavy Rigid Vehicle licence or ability to achieve one
• A forklift licence or the ability to achieve it
