Summary

An exciting opportunity to build the profile and reputation of a nationally significant agency. As our airspace gets busier and more complex with new types of aircraft, Airservices Australia will be crucial in making our skies safer, quicker and cleaner.

This external communications specialist will work across the operational and non-operational parts of the business to find and shape stories to share with external audiences that show the value of our services. You will also be tasked with protecting and enhancing the organisation’s reputation through building strong external relationships and executing sound judgement in managing issues.

As part of a broad change program, you will be key to finding Airservices’ voice and embedding a strong communications culture throughout the organisation.

The Organisation

Airservices is a government owned organisation providing safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible services to the aviation industry.

Each year we manage over four million aircraft movements carrying more than 156 million passengers, and provide air navigation services across 11 per cent of the world’s airspace.

Airservices has two major operating centres in Melbourne and Brisbane and a corporate office in Canberra. We operate 29 air traffic towers at international and regional airports, and provide aviation rescue fire fighting services at 26 Australian airports.

The Role

The External Communications Advisor will develop and deliver centralised external communications, with a focus on media relations, in support of Airservices’ strategic goals. You will manage media, advise leaders, streamline communications and develop content for multiple channels. You will report to the External Communications Senior Advisor.

The Person

The candidate should have a background in media or issues management and demonstrated judgement and experience in managing sensitive issues. You need to work collaboratively and efficiently and write engagingly. You will need to be proactive, persistent, positive and patient.

Skills and Experience 

The successful applicant will have: 

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in media and communications or as a journalist
  • Demonstrated capability to build trusted relationships with media stakeholders
  • Ability to keep a cool head and demonstrate good judgement under pressure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to adapt writing style to different channels and audiences
  • Can meet deadlines and balance multiple demands
