The Role & The Team 

Airservices is transforming the way aerodromes are managed at Canberra and Western Sydney, through Digital Aerodrome Services, integrating real time operation data with 360-degree live feed of the Aerodrome to controllers at a secure remote location.  

As Western Sydney & Canberra DAS Operational Safety Manager you will develop safety arguments, design the portfolio safety plan, lead safety activities (with a focus on applying suitable hazard identification and risk analysis methods) and be responsible for running the execution of the portfolio Western Sydney & Canberra safety program. You will also engage with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority as the regulator of aviation safety. 

  • Identify and manage safety resources including internal and contractor resources across the WS/CB Safety Program to ensure ongoing technical, operational and safety support to the safety program.  

  • Provide safety expertise and leadership to ensure that the changes to systems and process are compliant with Airservices SMS and ensure that operational safety risk associated with the changes are managed within Airservices risk tolerance levels.  

  • Develop and maintain key safety artefacts including Safety Plan, Safety Argument, Risk Registers and Safety Reporting including endorsing all project and program safety cases and reports and other documentation in accordance with Airservices SMS and the approved Safety Plan.  

  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate the conduct of safety activities as defined in the safety program, including hazard identification, hazard analysis, risk assessment, technical, system and human factors workshops and Safety Plan Working Groups.  

  • Communicate and consult with stakeholders, accountable managers and the regulator in working to obtain risk acceptance, approvals and/or no objections.

The Person 

  • Essential: Tertiary qualification in system safety, engineering, WHS, or related field.  

  • Desirable – Postgraduate qualifications in Safety Engineering, WHS  

  • Experience in regulatory engagement in safety and operational safety 

  • Demonstrated experience in development of leading and authoring safety cases / safety argument  

  • Knowledge and experience in operational safety and implementation  

  • Demonstrated experience in SFARIP and ALARP methodology applications and development  

  • Demonstrated experience managing safety resources to achieve Program and Organisational strategic objectives.  

  • Demonstrated experience applying industry best practice system safety analysis techniques/methodologies (e.g. ARP 4761, MIL-STD 882E, IEC-61508, Eurocontrol (SAM)) and writing PHA, FHA, FTA, HAZOP, FMECA artifacts 

  • Extensive knowledge of safety management system principles and processes, able to articulate and plan the timing of safety activities, and inputs/outputs that exist between the different disciplines that contribute to the program safety cases and safety artifacts.  

  • Experience of leading the safety program and artefacts development to reach CASA non-objection (or in other similar authorities if not in aviation – such as Rail and Defence) 

  • Familiarity with Eurocontrol Safety Assessment Methodology or similar industry standard methods and understanding of systems engineering processes,  

  • Understanding of human factors application in evaluating change.  

  • Effective and concise written and verbal communication skills.  

  • Demonstrated ability to engage regulatory authority, stakeholders, foster relationships, facilitate partnerships and cooperation at all levels
