Airservices is a government owned organisation providing safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible services to the aviation industry.
Each year we manage over four million aircraft movements carrying more than 156 million passengers, and provide air navigation services across 11 per cent of the world’s airspace.
Airservices has two major operating centres in Melbourne and Brisbane and a corporate office in Canberra. We operate 29 air traffic control towers at international and regional airports, and provide aviation rescue and fire fighting services at 26 Australian airports.
As a Principal Airport and Environmental Specialist within the Operational Standards Unit in Air Navigation Services, you will ensure that Airservices obligations under the Airservices Act and other relevant legislation and ministerial directives are met. You will provide technical leadership, specialist advice, guidance and support for Airservices' environmental management strategy and activities, enabling effective management of Airservices' environmental risks – in the air, and on the ground.
The position will have a strong focus on managing environmental and heritage issues associated with Air Navigation Services on-ground activities and assets, as well as providing specialist input to the assessment of flightpath changes and airport-related developments.
You will play a leading role in the newly formed Airport and Environmental Assurance (AEA) Team within the Operational Standards Unit, supporting the Team Leader in a regulated, high-performing and accountable team, while actively contributing towards delivering Airservices' record of safety, environmental performance, workplace health, and risk and compliance excellence.
The role requires a person with a professional yet easy-going demeanour who can deal with shifting priorities and challenging schedules in a highly specialised work environment. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communications skills to establish, develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, primarily within the aviation, government and construction sectors. The role has a strong supervisory component, overseeing the technical work and performance of other team members, while assisting the Team Leader with peer review of written work and mentoring other staff.
Skills and Experience
The successful applicant will have:
- A minimum of 10-15 years’ experience in the aviation, consulting, government and/or construction sectors.
- Demonstrated experience with aviation environmental issues, such as aircraft noise, emissions, site contamination, heritage, fuel management and/or hazardous materials.
- Demonstrated knowledge of risk-based approaches to environmental management, including EMS, occurrence investigations and assurance activities.
- Knowledge of relevant Commonwealth legislation and regulations.
- Qualifications in environmental science, engineering or aviation, with higher degrees preferred.
- Demonstrated professional networks in the Australian aviation, consulting, government and/or construction sectors would be highly regarded.
